A meaningful share of local scholarship money never appears on any website. Civic clubs, churches, employers, unions, and alumni associations hand their awards to high school counseling offices to distribute, and that is the only place they are listed.
What to do. Ask your counselor for the current list, and then ask again every month. New awards arrive throughout the year and the list you saw in September is not the list in February.
Ask specifically. “Do you have a list of local scholarships? Are there any that go unclaimed most years?” That second question surfaces the awards with almost no competition.
If you have already graduated. Call your former high school’s counseling office anyway. Some local awards are open to students already in college, and counselors generally keep those lists.
Other places to ask. Your employer’s HR department, your parents’ employers, your church, and any organization you or your family belong to.
