Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.org) hosts more than 70,000 free books whose copyright has expired.
If your literature, philosophy, or history course assigns older texts, there is a strong chance your entire reading list is here at no cost. Download as an ebook or read in your browser.
One tip: if your instructor specifies a particular translation or edition, check with them before relying on the free version, since page numbers and translations vary.
