United Way of the Plains (unitedwayplains.org) offers free tax filing services in south central Kansas each filing season.
Why file even if you barely earned anything. Refundable tax credits can put money in your pocket rather than just reducing what you owe. Students and young workers routinely skip filing and lose refunds they were entitled to.
What to bring. Photo ID, Social Security card or ITIN letter, W-2s and any 1099s, and your bank account and routing number for direct deposit. If you paid tuition, bring your 1098-T from your school, since education credits can be significant.
When. Sites generally operate January through mid-April. Check unitedwayplains.org or dial 211 for current locations, hours, and whether appointments are required.
Also available through 211. Tax filing assistance is one of the quick-reference categories United Way maintains, alongside food pantries, shelters, housing, and rental assistance.
