Turning 26 triggers a deadline most people do not see coming.
You can stay on a parent’s plan until you turn 26. After that you need your own coverage. Losing coverage is a qualifying life event opening a Special Enrollment Period, giving you 60 days to enroll outside the normal window. Sixty days moves fast, so start before your birthday.
Kansas uses HealthCare.gov. Kansas does not run its own exchange, so you enroll at healthcare.gov or by phone at (800) 318-2596. Kansas residents with household income between 100 and 400 percent of the federal poverty level qualify for premium tax credits, and the large majority of Kansas marketplace enrollees receive them.
Know the Kansas coverage gap. Kansas has not expanded Medicaid. KanCare primarily covers children, pregnant women, parents at very low incomes, seniors, and people with disabilities. Non-disabled adults ages 19 to 64 without dependent children are generally not eligible regardless of how low their income is. Adults earning below 100 percent of the federal poverty level also fall below where marketplace subsidies begin. An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Kansans sit in this gap.
If you are in that gap, community health centers are your answer. GraceMed, Hunter Health, and HealthCore Clinic are federally qualified health centers in Wichita offering medical, dental, vision, and behavioral health care, charging on a sliding fee scale based on household income when you are uninsured. Guadalupe Clinic provides care at no cost to uninsured patients who qualify.
If you are enrolled in school. Many colleges offer a student health plan and an on-campus health center. Check both before assuming the marketplace is your only option.
Free help deciding. The Kansas Insurance Department Consumer Assistance Hotline is (800) 432-2484 in Kansas. 211 Kansas can also connect you to enrollment assistance.
