Make Sure Your Community College Credits Transfer

September 3, 2026

Kansas has built one of the more student-friendly transfer systems in the country, but it only works if you know the rules before you enroll.

Systemwide Transfer courses. The Kansas Board of Regents maintains a list of approved Systemwide Transfer (SWT) courses. A course on that list, completed at any Kansas public university, community college, or technical college, will transfer to any other Kansas public institution offering an equivalent course. Faculty from all 32 Kansas public institutions meet annually through the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups to keep learning outcomes aligned.

Use the Transfer Kansas portal. It houses the full SWT list and lets you check transferability by subject area and by institution before you register. Do this in your first advising appointment. See kansasregents.gov/transfer_articulation.

One caution. Whether a lower-division course counts toward upper-division credit is at the discretion of the receiving institution, so a course transferring is not the same as a course satisfying a specific major requirement. Talk to an advisor at the school you intend to transfer to, not only the one you attend.

Degree type matters. An Associate of Arts or Science transfers as a block. An Associate of Applied Science or General Studies is evaluated course by course.

Reverse Transfer. If you transferred to a Kansas public university before finishing your associate degree, Reverse Transfer retroactively grants that degree by combining credits from the community or technical college with credits earned after transferring. Students are typically notified of eligibility within their first year at the university. It costs nothing and puts a completed credential on your record.

Private colleges. Many maintain their own articulation agreements with Kansas community colleges. Ask both schools directly.
