Scholarship season is not one season. It is a year-long sequence, and students who treat it as a spring activity miss most of it.
Junior year, spring
- Take or retake the ACT if you are pursuing the Kansas State Scholarship, which uses an index combining ACT composite and seventh-semester GPA.
- Confirm with your counselor that you are on track to complete the Kansas Scholars Curriculum.
- Start a running list of activities, service, work, and honors. You will need it repeatedly.
Summer before senior year
- Draft one strong personal essay. Most prompts are variations on the same few questions.
- Ask two people to be your recommenders, well before anyone is busy.
September and October
- The FAFSA opens around October 1. File early, since some aid is first-come, first-served. It is free at studentaid.gov.
- Early-deadline foundation awards open. The Rudd Foundation Scholarship has historically had an early December deadline, so start it in October.
November through January
- Wichita Foundation applications open January 1.
- Wichita State’s scholarship window runs November 1 through March 1. Other schools have similar windows; ask each one.
- Check with your counselor monthly for local awards that never appear online.
February through April
- Kansas State Scholar designations are typically issued between February and April.
- Wichita Foundation applications close March 31.
- This is peak season. Apply broadly.
May and June
- The State of Kansas Student Aid Application deadline is June 1. This is separate from the FAFSA and required for most Kansas Board of Regents awards.
Every year after
- Many awards, including the Kansas State Scholarship, must be reapplied for annually. Set a recurring calendar reminder.
