“As a Student Support Advocate, we have the unique opportunity to be with our students and their families in some of the darker moments of life such as death, divorce, a house fire, or even the loss of a parent’s job. One moment comes to mind in which I was able to be a part of helping a student who just lost his mother. It was unexpected and his entire life was turned upside down in an instant. He had a somewhat chaotic homelife before, and when this tragedy struck he chose to come to school to be surrounded by support staff and teachers who were a constant in his life. Pando was able to help with basic needs while he made the transition into a new home and family life. We were also able to help him stay on track in school by providing supplies and a safe place to work. We weren’t the only support he had, but it was nice to know that we could help a student in such a significant way. He contacted us after he moved onto high school and stated that he joined the high school forensic and tennis team and it was because of us that he made it through. I think he’s graduating this year. We don’t always get to hear these types of success stories, but they go a long way in our line of work, and they help me remember that we all face challenges in life and that we need to try to be the light for others. Several of our students don’t have that person in their life, that person they can count on or go to in times of need, so I try to be that for my students. ”
